The Baofeng UV-25 Plus is a handheld radio that definitely stands out. The moment you pick it up, you immediately understand its positioning: no compromises on size, battery capacity, or durability. It’s a radio designed for those who prioritize reliability, long runtime, and power over sheer portability.
Overall Impressions and Ergonomics
The UV-25 Plus comes across as a true “brick” of a radio: heavy and solid. In hand, it immediately conveys a strong sense of durability, thanks to its combination of thick plastic and metal components that inspire confidence from the very first use.
It isn’t officially rated as waterproof, but in testing it handled splashes and light rain without any issues—evidence of a well-executed overall build quality.
One of its standout features is undoubtedly the massive 5200 mAh battery, which delivers truly impressive runtime. In real-world use, it feels like it lasts forever, even with extended monitoring and frequent transmissions.
The approximately 2-inch display is adequately sized and easy to read. The resolution is excellent—actually among the best I’ve seen in this price range—with crisp characters and clearly distinguishable information, even outdoors.
The keypad is large and easy to use. Once you get used to it, it proves practical, especially when wearing gloves or operating in less-than-ideal conditions. There’s also a clearly visible front status LED that provides an immediate indication of the radio’s operating state.
The UV-25 Plus includes a built-in GPS/GNSS module, which is very convenient. It allows you to view your position and transmit coordinates to other compatible Baofeng radios. APRS support is not currently included, but it’s possible this could be added in a future firmware update. In testing, GPS lock was reasonably fast and reliable.
Another useful feature is the automatic fall alert. The UV-25 Plus incorporates an accelerometer that can be configured to transmit an alert on a specific frequency if the operator falls.
From an RF standpoint, the measured output power is impressive: over 11 W on VHF and around 9.5 W on UHF. Reception is clean, with no obvious spurious emissions, and the audio section performs well too. The microphone is clear, and the speaker is extremely powerful—likely one of the strongest I’ve tested on a Baofeng handheld.

The kit is extensive and thoughtfully designed for field use:

- Mini antenna, of questionable usefulness on this radio—mainly for transport (though perfect on a UV-5R Mini!)
The belt clip makes little sense given the size and weight of the radio, but Baofeng has wisely included a practical MOLLE-compatible carrying case with a shoulder strap. There is no dock station included.
Programming and Connectivity
The radio can be programmed using CHIRP by selecting the UV-21 PRO-GPS model, or via Baofeng’s own software. It supports zones (up to 100 channels per zone) and a total of 1000 channels—an extremely useful feature for those managing many frequencies. Firmware updates follow the standard procedures; we tested updating to the latest version without any issues.
As for connectivity:

La Baofeng UV-25 Plus è una radio portatile che non passa inosservata. Basta prenderla in mano per capire subito il suo posizionamento: niente compromessi su dimensioni, batteria e robustezza. È una radio pensata per chi cerca affidabilità, autonomia e potenza, più che portabilità.
Impressioni generali ed ergonomia
La UV-25 Plus si presenta come un vero e proprio mattone: pesante, solida. Al tatto restituisce una sensazione di grande robustezza, grazie a una combinazione di plastica spessa e parti in metallo che trasmettono affidabilità fin dal primo utilizzo.
Non è ufficialmente dichiarata impermeabile, ma dai test effettuati regge senza problemi schizzi e pioggia leggera, segno di una costruzione comunque ben curata.
Uno dei punti di forza principali è senza dubbio la batteria enorme da 5200 mAh, che garantisce un’autonomia davvero impressionante: nell’uso reale sembra durare un’infinità, anche con ascolto prolungato e trasmissioni frequenti.
Lo schermo da circa 2 pollici è sufficientemente grande e ben leggibile. La risoluzione è ottima, anzi tra le migliori che mi sia capitato di vedere su una radio di questa fascia, con caratteri nitidi e informazioni ben distinguibili anche all’aperto.
La tastiera è grande e di facile uso. Una volta presa la mano può risultare pratica, soprattutto con i guanti o in condizioni non ideali. Presente anche un LED di stato frontale, ben visibile, che mostra chiaramente lo stato operativo della radio.
La UV-25 Plus integra un modulo GPS/GNSS, molto comodo: consente sia la visualizzazione della propria posizione sia la trasmissione delle coordinate ad altri apparati Baofeng compatibili. Non è presente il supporto APRS, ma non è da escludere che possa arrivare con un aggiornamento firmware futuro. Dai test effettuati, il fix GPS è abbastanza veloce e affidabile.
Altra funzionalitá é l’alert automatico in caso di caduta. La UV-25 Plus integra infatti un accelerometro che puó essere configurato per diramare un avviso su una frequenza specifica in caso di caduta dell’operatore.
Dal punto di vista radioelettrico, la potenza di uscita misurata è notevole: oltre 11 W in VHF e circa 9,5 W in UHF. La ricezione è pulita, senza spurie evidenti, e anche la sezione audio si comporta bene: microfono chiaro e altoparlante estremamente potente, probabilmente uno dei più performante provati su una portatile Baofeng.

La dotazione è ricca e ben pensata per l’uso sul campo:

- antenna snodabile
- Cuffia con microfono
- mini antenna, di dubbia utilità su questa radio, se non nella fase di trasporto (ma perfetta su una UV-5R Mini!)
La clip da cintura ha poco senso viste dimensioni e peso dell’apparato, ma infatti Baofeng ha pensato di includere una pratica custodia MOLLE compatibile con tanto di tracolla. Non é presente una DockStation.
Programmazione e connettività
La radio può essere programmata tramite CHIRP, selezionando il modello UV-21 PRO-GPS, o tramite il software fornito da Baofeng. Supporta zone (da 100 elementi )e fino a 1000 canali totali, una caratteristica molto apprezzabile per chi gestisce molte frequenze. L’aggiornamento firmware segue le solite procedure, abbiamo testato l’update all’ultima versione senza problemi.
Per quanto riguarda le connessioni:
