After using the Alervites AT2 Smart UHF Radio for the past couple of weeks, I wanted to share my experience and overall impressions. I have tested the radio in real-world outdoor conditions and compared it directly with some of the other radios in my collection, including my Baofeng UV-5RM with GPS. Overall, I have been pleasantly surprised by what this compact radio offers, especially considering its price point.
The first thing that stands out about the AT2 is its size and design. The radio is incredibly compact, lightweight, and has a sleek profile that makes it easy to carry throughout the day. Whether you're attaching it to a backpack, carrying it in a pocket, or using it during outdoor activities, it never feels bulky or cumbersome. For hikers, campers, off-road enthusiasts, or anyone who values lightweight gear, this is a significant advantage. During my testing, I often forgot I was even carrying it because of how little space it takes up and how comfortable it is to wear.
I tested the radio during several outdoor excursions, including a hike through a remote wooded area. Despite its small size, the AT2 performed surprisingly well. To provide a fair comparison, I brought along my Baofeng UV-5RM and tested both radios under similar conditions. The AT2 held its own and delivered reliable communication throughout most of my hike. Audio quality was clear, transmissions were easy to understand, and I experienced very little interference during normal operation.
If I had one criticism, it would be the radio's range in dense forest environments. During my testing in heavily wooded terrain, I was able to maintain reliable communication out to approximately half a kilometer. Communication became less consistent beyond that distance, and by around three-quarters of a kilometer, transmissions were largely lost. However, it is important to keep in mind that dense vegetation, terrain, and environmental obstacles can significantly reduce the effective range of any handheld radio. Baofeng advertises a range of approximately 1–2 kilometers in open areas and around 1 kilometer in urban environments, so I plan to conduct additional testing in more open terrain to see how closely the AT2 aligns with those expectations.
One of the standout features that truly sets the AT2 apart is its off-grid messaging capability. This is a feature I wish more radios, including models like the UV-5RM, would incorporate. Through the companion app, users can send messages and even share pictures without relying on cellular service. This functionality opens up many possibilities for outdoor recreation and emergency preparedness.
For example, if a hiking group decides to split into multiple teams or if several vehicles are exploring different trails while off-roading, the ability to exchange messages and photos can significantly improve communication and coordination. In emergency situations, such as natural disasters where cellular networks may become overloaded or unavailable, having an alternative communication method can be incredibly valuable. This feature alone adds a level of versatility that many traditional handheld radios simply do not offer.
Battery life has also been solid during my testing period. While I haven't conducted formal battery endurance tests, I found that the radio comfortably lasted through extended outdoor activities without requiring frequent charging. Combined with its lightweight design, this makes it a practical option for day trips, weekend camping excursions, and emergency preparedness kits.
Overall, I am very impressed with the Alervites AT2 Smart UHF Radio. It successfully combines a compact and lightweight form factor with modern communication features that are genuinely useful in the field. While I would like to see improved performance in dense wooded environments, the radio performs well for its intended purpose and offers features that are difficult to find at this price point.
Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, a hiker, camper, off-road adventurer, or simply a homeowner looking for a reliable communication tool for emergencies, the AT2 is worth considering. It delivers a great balance of portability, functionality, and affordability. After several weeks of use, I can confidently say that it has earned a place in my gear lineup, and I look forward to putting it through even more testing in the future.
